The 2019 Gensler Seattle Design Festival installation, The Emergence, activates Waterfront Seattle by making space for play, minimal art, and unique scenic views of Elliot Bay. Inspired by the underwater forests of kelp beneath the pier, over two hundred vertical pipes create a buffer zone between the sea and the city. Visitors are encouraged to walk through the abstracted kelp forest, where they can manipulate flexible “kelp trunks” while playing and interacting with one another.
