Previously disparate research fields are now integrated into a single state-of-the-art facility. A four-story stair within the glazed central spine provides visual connections and sparks spontaneous collaboration between these researchers.

The facility promotes the best of sustainable agriculture and ecological stewardship after participation by members of the state’s grain, tree fruit, wine, grape, potato, dairy, beef, and raspberry industries, as well as the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Washington Farm Bureau. Modular laboratories can easily be rearranged to support flexible research needs beyond the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences.

Located across the street from Martin Stadium, the new landscaped approach creates a multi-functional public space. This prominent location provides heightened visibility to the importance of WSU’s commitment to fostering its land-grant heritage and tradition of service to society.

Our progressive design-build team partnered with the university from the beginning, prioritizing innovative design and construction methods, high performance systems, and construction efficiencies – completing the complex in only two years.

Prioritized pot-holing activities to confirm critical site constraints, then coordinated the location of the new building and all below-grade site and campus utilities around the campus utility tunnel, as well as pedestrian circulation, using Civil 3D modeling.

Reviewed options with the team to either span or build next to an existing tunnel. Together, the team determined the best course was to accommodate the existing tunnel in place, lowering construction costs.

Locating vehicular access against a steep slope created more space for landscaping and other site amenities. A striking metal and glass wall establishes a new entry for the entire research complex, and the new courtyard enables social interaction through everyday use and scheduled events.
