The historic East Kong Yick Building, constructed in 1910, provided an opportunity for the museum to greatly expand its facilities. The building features a museum, theater, gallery, and grand staircase, as well as retail and office space.
Seismically upgraded the deteriorating building by strengthening and replacing existing features to make it both usable and seismically secure.
Accommodated a wide variety of materials and building styles in the original structure to retain key historical elements. Reframing and new structural elements introduced a new set of unique spaces, including the theater and community meeting areas.
Successfully installed a new water main without interrupting operations of adjacent facilities, made possible through our team’s deep knowledge of City of Seattle permitting code and the existing utilities.
