The historic library’s makeover included a complete renovation and seismic upgrade, as well as the addition of a 3-story learning commons, offering a new community experience with flexible learning and studying areas, the latest technology, an academic support center, a coffee shop, and views of the urban campus.
Supplemented the seismic resistance of the existing structure with new reinforced concrete walls that rise from the foundation through the building, increasing safety of students and staff.
Closely coordinated the use of long span structural steel beams and precise installations of the braced frame lateral system to provide unencumbered, flexible classrooms, public study areas, and conference space in the Commons.
Approached civil site design as an opportunity to enhance student pathways and gathering areas between the library, commons, and the adjacent student center.
A large and visible stormwater system elegantly threads through the site and is discovered through rain gardens, swales graced with native plants, reclaimed granite water walls, and a meadow where the remaining rainwater is filtered, upholding the university’s commitment to sustainability.
