A flexible, universal floor plan accommodates current and future patient care. Acres of cardboard used to mock up the entire facility during early design phases allowed hospital staff to walk through each space and provide real-time feedback.

Corridors supported by 3-foot-wide expansion joints connect Building Care with the Friends of Costco Building (constructed in a previous phase) at every level.

At the opposite end of Building Care, another expansion joint and large bridge tie the facility to the existing Rivers Building. A similar linkage will connect to the future addition, now in planning stage.

Relocation of a large storm line and the former emergency department drop-off before construction were crucial to the project’s success. Our team collaborated on the solution for the first, moving the existing 24-inch storm line away from the Building Care footprint and bolting it to the existing Friends of Costco Building within the subgrade garage connection area.

An early permit resolved the emergency department access issue, allowing the hospital to relocate the drop-off zone during construction until the permanent location at Building Care opened. Early correspondence with city officials expedited this fundamental work. The team also proactively prepared infrastructure to support future the Phase 3 expansion.
