

Created an inventive, customized reinforcement plan which allowed the library to remain in its iconic location while avoiding the cost, permitting complexity, and environmental impacts of work within the river channel.
Collaborated with the geotechnical engineer to develop a strategy for strengthening the structure, which was seismically deficient and prone to soil liquefaction, then provided necessary soil stabilization via deep pile and pile cap abutments.
Reworked stack layouts to avoid the pricey process of strengthening existing beams, and saved additional cost by reusing as much of the existing infrastructure as possible including sewer lines and water service connections, and structural trusses.

Navigated the site’s complex permitting requirements, streamlining the process and remaining on schedule, implementing building and site improvements that did not adversely impact the health of the ecosystem, use of the river, or salmon habitat.
Completed a full seismic upgrade, aligning all upgrades with the architectural vision, from floor-to-roof braces, and strengthening of the roof and base structure, to the series of bridge abutments, elements rarely found in buildings.
Supported the architect throughout the public review process, helping to educate and alleviate concerns of library patrons and community members.
