Other features include a large learning stair for socialization, learning, and connection between the two floors. A STEM lab and Early Learning Center round out learning opportunities for the community. Exposed wood beams in the library complement the warm and natural design palette.

Participated in the assessment of numerous siting options, providing design alternatives to address the 35-foot-high plateau, high groundwater levels, and soils high in organic material from the former agricultural use and location of Lake Sammamish. More than 215 augercast piles and an intricate maze of grade beams support the structure at its lowest level. Removal of rotted timber piles associated with the former structure and replacement of poor soils with structural fill established a stable foundation.


Strategically designed the stormwater system to minimize the detention vault and water quality treatment system and optimize the available site area for school programming, another LID element. The design separates control and treatment of runoff into two areas. The parking lot and other pollution-generating surfaces drain through a swale into a detention vault and water quality facility. The building, playground, and synthetic turf field drain to a gravel detention system located below the field, a solution that reduced the site area needed for stormwater management.

Collaborated with the design team on cost-effective solutions to achieve project goals. The building gracefully transitions up the slope, anchored by concrete retaining walls that also step up the hill. This terraced layout also created opportunities to incorporate exterior views from anywhere in the school.

Provided easy connections from classrooms to outdoor learning areas, including a large interior courtyard partially supported by the building’s lowest level, and multiple vegetative rooftop learning labs. A lush rain garden graces the building’s east entry, providing additional opportunities to learn about the natural detention and cleansing properties of soil and plants as well as insects and birds that inhabit these areas.
