2005 Poplar S180722 01 N13 Exterior Dusk Building Entrance From Parking Lot

Dramatic cantilevers with 9-foot CLT overhangs crown the extraordinary structure, and exposed steel framing and braced frames celebrate the interior structure. The fire protection system is discretely suspended in the beam cavity of this exposed hybrid CLT and steel structure.

A large canopy at the entrance features exposed CLT on the underside. This unique mass timber structure required close coordination with the architectural team to provide appropriate weather proofing and support.

Worked closely with the geotechnical engineer and contractor to mitigate the poor soil conditions created by liquifiable soils, as well as the proximity of the wetlands and nearby Tibbetts Creek. Driven grout piles, from 35 feet to 60 feet in depth, stabilize the soil and provide a strong foundation.
