Embodied Energy & Carbon Footprint

Coughlin Porter Lundeen is an Early Adopter Sponsor of the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool.
Launched by the Carbon Leadership Forum in 2019 to evaluate the embodied carbon associated with building materials, the tool gathers Environmental Product Declarations from local manufacturers and organizes them into a user-friendly database. This database information is used to quickly and easily measure a project’s carbon footprint.
As a member of the EC3 tool development team, we’re working toward an incorporation of Tally and Revit into the EC3 tool that would allow architects and engineers to access the database and calculator from their dashboard as they develop building plans. This link between fundamental industry tools and the EC3 tool will make reaching a carbon baseline even more achievable.
We’ve also accepted the 2050 Challenge.
Committed to this initiative to meet embodied carbon benchmarks and higher reduction targets, our team is actively looking for ways to measure and drive down the carbon footprint of our buildings. We’re collaborating with our teams to find solutions, working together toward net zero buildings in both operations and construction. We acknowledge that minimizing the embodied energy and carbon footprint must be part of an integrated study of the whole building. Material selection decisions should be balanced with operational energy considerations and life cycle assessment.
