Obliteride and Bike MS

One of our favorite ways to make a difference is on the seat of a bicycle. Our biggest summer riding events: Fred Hutch’s Obliteride and Bike MS. Both organizations host weekend-long rides that drive medical research (cancer and Multiple Sclerosis, respectively) forward. This year, we joined Obliteride for a record-breaking year and took on the Deception Pass Classic course with Team GLY. Read more about the rides here.

YWCA Mother’s Day Gift Basket Drive

YWCA is a national organization that aims to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. They take care of moms all year long, so this Mother’s Day, we shared the love, preparing 29 baskets for their basket drive. Full of goodies like lotions, scented candles, nail polish, lipstick, planners, and unsigned Mother’s Day greeting cards, the baskets support YWCA and help make every mom feel remembered and special. Learn more about the basket drive here.

ACE Mentor Program

As a part of the ACE Mentor Program of Washington, we mentor students, inspire them in STEM subjects, and help them understand what we do as engineers. In our office last week, we tasked students with designing water filtration systems (from old soda bottles) and building straw towers to be tested against load and earthquake simulation. They rose to the challenge and it was great fun for all!

Supporting STEM and the Next Generation of Great Engineers

A collaboration between Getty Images, Washington STEM, and Your Life has us all kinds of inspired. The program is called RePicture STEM, and its goal is an important one: evolve the “stock” photography associated with STEM. Photos have power, and we agree that the next generation of STEM imagery should inspire youth and be inclusive. In addition to contributing material, the initiative made us rethink our internal library, reminding us that the photos we publish alongside our content help shape perceptions. The RePicture STEM initiative especially hit home for us because here in Washington, we host job shadow programs, are ACE mentors, speak at conferences and participate on panels, all in the name of supporting the evolution of STEM. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math help shape our world, and we’re excited by efforts that ensure STEM is encouraged and supported.
