The Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) works to end the homelessness of those living with serious mental or addictive illnesses. One step toward that goal involved the construction of an 87-unit low income apartment building meant to give disadvantaged people the opportunity to reach a higher potential through stable housing and onsite treatment services. Our close relationship with the DESC meant we understood their processes and organizational goals, allowing us to navigate through the design phase with heightened efficiency. We designed a flexible, high quality structural system for a relatively low cost to keep within the project’s restricted budget. Given the aged infrastructure on and near the site, our civil engineers worked on modernizing street and alley areas and providing needed accessibility to both. The site, which resides in a Green Factor zoning area, promotes sustainable living through green roofs and gardens.
