When MOHAI selected this massive concrete structure built on a wooden pier over Lake Union as its new home, our firm provided comprehensive structural assessment, seismic upgrades, and integration of new utilities with legacy systems. Our upgrade solutions were minimally invasive to both the historic character of the building as well as the sensitive marine environment. They included hanging the grand staircase, pier support, and strengthening of roof and exhibit supports. Our ability to integrate new utilities with the existing infrastructure—despite the challenge presented by the building’s location over water—saved the owner extensively on project costs. The building won the 2013 Beth Chave Historic Preservation Award and is the only museum in Seattle with LEED Platinum status.
