At the heart of the Central Washington University campus, the Student Union Building and Recreation Center offers state-of-the-art spaces and services to the campus community. The project team overcame several unanticipated conditions during construction, including the discovery of an underground stream. Our firm was able to work with the design team, owner, and government agencies to re-direct the stream, thereby saving the University time and money. The gymnasium required a particularly unique design that maintained the desired architectural aesthetic. Its roof framing system consists of fabricated steel trusses that span 105 feet and support an elevated, suspended running track. Site design involved rerouting of steam tunnels underneath the building using concrete-encased duct banks. Our civil team also re-directed roof drainage to a landscaped streambed, which leverages the infiltrative properties of the surrounding soil to assist with storm water mitigation.
