8th and Republican is a mixed-use apartment building consisting of eight stories of residential with retail on a portion of the lower two levels and below-grade parking. We are in the process of providing structural design services on this project. The geometry of the building presents a challenge as levels three through seven are skewed at a different angle from the lower levels. We are accommodating the awkward angles with an efficient, highly customized structural design that is the result of close and effective collaboration with the architectural team. Our goal is to incorporate structural elements without impacting function or aesthetics. Innovative, collaborative structural design is exemplified in one of the defining architectural features of the building: the dramatic extending balconies which cantilever with little apparent means of structural support.
