Supporting STEM and the Next Generation of Great Engineers

A collaboration between Getty Images, Washington STEM, and Your Life has us all kinds of inspired. The program is called RePicture STEM, and its goal is an important one: evolve the “stock” photography associated with STEM. Photos have power, and we agree that the next generation of STEM imagery should inspire youth and be inclusive. In addition to contributing material, the initiative made us rethink our internal library, reminding us that the photos we publish alongside our content help shape perceptions. The RePicture STEM initiative especially hit home for us because here in Washington, we host job shadow programs, are ACE mentors, speak at conferences and participate on panels, all in the name of supporting the evolution of STEM. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math help shape our world, and we’re excited by efforts that ensure STEM is encouraged and supported.

Educurious Career Connections Job Shadow

Encouraging and mentoring young engineers is a priority to our team. This summer, Coughlin Porter Lundeen played host to four Cleveland STEM High School students as part of the Educurious Career Connections Job Shadow Program. These students got a glimpse into the life of an engineer by working with our structural and civil engineers. Throughout the week, they visited a project site, learned how to design a sewer service for a portable at their high school, participated in brainstorms, lunched with our project managers, and even took over our Instagram account! By the end of the week, our “teengineers” gave a final presentation to our office and created a game show featuring four members of our firm’s leadership team. It was a pleasure hosting these four future engineers and we wish them all the best as they continue to explore their design passions!

In 2013, the event’s inaugural year, one dedicated member of our team rode the 100-mile route to raise money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Every year since we have relentlessly supported our team’s efforts with a chili fundraiser party and company donation matching. Last year, one of our principals rode along. Together we strive to create a world where cancer is behind us.

Box Lunches to Support Childhaven

A longtime supporter of Childhaven, Coughlin Porter Lundeen employees enjoyed a box lunch with proceeds going to support the organization’s efforts to end child abuse and neglect. With other participants, we helped raise more than $31,000 for Childhaven programs. Our firm remains on the top 10 list for largest donations and winner of 2015’s Most Spirited!
